Finding the Right Counsellor: A Person-Centred Perspective from Counselling to Grow.
Starting therapy is a courageous and often life-changing step. But finding the right counsellor can feel daunting—especially when faced with dozens of profiles, qualifications, and approaches.
At Counselling to Grow, based on the Isle of Wight, I offer a calm, supportive space where you can explore whatever’s on your mind—at your own pace and in your own way. Whether you’re drawn to face-to-face counselling, walk and talk sessions in nature, or online therapy from the comfort of home, I’m here to meet you where you are.
But before choosing any therapist (me included), it’s important to feel confident that you’ve found the right fit. Here's how you can approach the process.
Start With You
The search for the right counsellor begins not with them, but with you. Consider:
What am I hoping to get from therapy?
Do I need a space to talk and be heard—or am I looking for specific tools or strategies?
Would I feel most comfortable indoors, outdoors, or online?
Knowing what you need can help narrow your search and ensure that the space you enter feels safe and supportive.
Understanding the Person-Centred Approach
There are many therapeutic approaches available in the UK, and it’s okay to feel unsure about which one is right for you. I work from a person-centred perspective, which means I won’t diagnose you or tell you how to fix things. Instead, I offer a compassionate, non-judgemental relationship built on empathy, honesty, and acceptance.
In our work together, you set the pace. You bring what feels important. I offer a space where you can make sense of things, grow in self-awareness, and move towards change that feels right for you.
Therapy That Fits Your Life
At Counselling to Grow, I offer three ways to access therapy:
Face-to-face sessions – in a private, welcoming space on the Isle of Wight.
Walk and talk therapy – for those who feel more comfortable processing while walking outdoors in nature.
Online counselling – via a secure video platform, for flexibility and comfort wherever you are.
Each option offers something unique, and we can talk together about what feels like the best fit for you.
What Makes the “Right” Counsellor?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but a few key things can help guide you:
Accreditation – I’m a qualified, insured counsellor and a member of NCPS, adhering to their ethical standards.
Connection – Do you feel comfortable, seen, and heard in your first session?
Transparency – A good counsellor will answer your questions openly and help you decide if you want to continue.
You might not feel an instant click (though sometimes you will!), but you should feel safe enough to be yourself.
Questions You Can Ask
Don’t be afraid to ask practical or personal questions before committing:
What’s your experience with [anxiety/relationship issues/grief/etc.]?
How do you usually work?
What can I expect in our first session?
How do walk and talk sessions work?
Therapy is your space. You deserve to feel informed and comfortable before stepping into it.
Ready to Take the First Step?
If you’re exploring therapy and wondering if person-centred counselling is right for you, I’d be happy to have a free 15 minute informal conversation. There’s no pressure—just a chance to talk things through and see what feels right.
Whether we meet in person, online, or out walking on the beautiful Isle of Wight, Counselling to Grow is here to support your journey—at your pace, in your way.
